About Squint Surgery
Squint Surgery is one of the more common types of eye surgeries. Most eye surgeons consider it a minor surgical procedure. Squint is caused by the absence of coordination between the muscles responsible for eye movement. Management consists of correction of refractive errors, patching the good eye where the other is lazy, an orthoptic treatment and corrective surgery.
Dr. Ramakant Hinge our Ophthalmologist with over three decades of experience recommends that treatment should be started as early as possible to ensure good visual acuity and binocular vision.

What is a squint?
“Squint” or strabismus is a condition when the patient cannot focus with both eyes together. This interferes with binocular vision and hence depth perception. A patient who is affected by the Squint is unable to perform simple everyday tasks like driving due to the condition.
Usually, a squint runs in the family. It can arise in the first few months of being born or even at a later age. Children can develop squint when they have a weak ability to use their eyes together.
What is Expect Before Squint Surgery?
Children, as well as adults, can receive squint surgery.
Before considering the surgery, your doctor may try other primary treatments like eyeglasses, eye exercises, etc. however, if these treatments do not work, then squint surgery is the only option to deal with strabismus.
Before undergoing the surgery, a set of simple tests will be done to check whether you are a good candidate to receive this surgery.
The doctor then will provide guidelines about what medications, food, drinks to take, or avoid while you are preparing for the surgery.
How Is Squint Surgery Performed At Dr Ramakant Hinge's Eye Clinic?
At Dr Ramakant Hinge's Eye Clinic - Opthalmologist | Eye Doctor, surgery is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. General anesthesia is used when operating on children.
The surgery starts with using an instrument called a lid speculum to keep the eye open.
The surgery is performed to tighten or move outside eye muscles to change the position of the eye. These eye muscles are detached from their original position and moved to the new position so that both the eyes coordinate.
Dissolvable stitches are used to attach muscles to their new position.
How Is Recovery After Squint Surgery?
Generally, there is no specific time period for recovery as it varies from person to person; but it can take several weeks to fully recover after squint surgery.
You may be given painkillers or eye drops to deal with pain, itchiness, or soreness that you may feel post-surgery.
You might have to deal with double vision for some time after the surgery.
You are advised not to drive, wear eye makeup, do swimming and other such activities that may involve direct contact with the eye or put too much pressure on the eye for 2-4 weeks at least.
Your doctor will give specific instructions as per your needs and requirements after the surgery. Make sure you follow them and do follow up check-ups as planned.
What is the outcome of squint surgery?
Apart from the cosmetic appearance that can cause embarrassment and inferiority complex, the misalignment of the eyes means they will lose their ability to work together. This will result in loss of eye coordination as the eyes will not achieve binocular vision (3 D vision) since the brain simply ignores signals from the eye that has a squint.
Surgery brings about the alignment of both eyes by shortening, lengthening or changing the position of one or more muscles. At Dr Ramakant Hinge's Eye Clinic - Opthalmologist | Eye Doctor, surgery is done on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia. Recovery may take about two weeks. General anaesthesia is used when operating on smaller children. Post-surgery refractive correction should be continued to maintain good vision and binocularity.
